“Incredible” Results at William Farr

Highest A-level attainment rates in public exams since pre-Covid times were achieved by students at a Welton school this summer.

William Farr celebrated a pass rate of 98.3%, its best-ever pre-pandemic attainment since the A-Level reform, leading to an average grade of a ‘B’.

More than a quarter of all grades awarded were A* or A, with over half of all grades A*-B – significantly higher than attainment levels from exams taken before the pandemic.

Over 90% of students received three or more offers from applications to University – the highest number in the last 10 years.  Almost a third of students have accepted places at Russell Group Universities.

One student has received an offer from Oxford University to study Physics and one student from Hull York Medical School to study medicine.

Headteacher Jonathan Knowler described the results as “incredible”.

“We have seen better attainment grades this year than before the disruption caused by the pandemic and when the new grading system was introduced in 2018,” Mr Knowler said.

“We should pay tribute to this cohort of students who have had so much disruption to their education.

“There was lost learning during Key Stage 4 through two lockdowns, cancellation of GCSE exams and limited access to any enrichment activities.  This was followed by further disruption in Year 12 through Covid-related isolations.

“The results are testimony to the students’ hard work, commitment and resolve.

“I’d like to thank my staff team who have worked so hard in supporting our students to achieve a terrific set of outcomes.

“Our focus is not just on those wanting to progress into higher education.

“Other progression routes will see students successfully pursue work-related training, apprenticeships in a variety of fields, and personal development opportunities through a gap year.”
