Furthering their sonic shift, Lincoln-based band Northern Captives have shared their genre bending work to date in the form of new single ‘ANXIETY DREAMS’ which has already surpassed 10,000 streams on Spotify. The single is the first track from the band released in 2023 and musically combines the dynamics explored in 2022’s triptych of singles to extremes. The band continue to push the perimeters of Alt-Rock, Punk Rock, Indie, and Emo allowing for a unique development within their sound.

Having dedicated many years to previous and current projects such as Bad Ideas, Real Talk, Hell’s Ditch and The Living Daylights the band wanted to take a different approach with this project; creatively functioning as independently as possible on all levels, developing a creative outlet as rewarding as it is demanding.

Initially forming in 2016 as a recording project by singer Sam Cook – Northern Captives in recent years have gone on to be championed by Alex Baker, Kerrang! Radio, Total Rock Radio, BBC Radio 1 Future Alternative, BBC Lincolnshire Introducing’s Record of the Week and named as one of DSCVRD Magazine’s Undiscovered Artists of the Year. The band ended their 2022 on top, selling out their first hometown headline show. 2023 they are back with their first single of the year ‘ANXIETY DREAMS’.

“ANXIETY DREAMS is a song about living with fluctuating mental health and learning to be kind and compassionate to yourself in the same way you would a friend. It’s written as an internal monologue battling anxiety by accepting its existence and not allowing it to direct your decisions or impact what you do day to day. We often speak to ourselves in ways we’d never dream of talking to anyone else. It’s important to check in with yourself and make sure your internal dialogue is positive.”

“Sonically ANXIETY DREAMS was written around jamming one weird shaped chord found in a kitchen across from one another. The central guitar line becomes the backbone to the song and other instrumentation takes care of the dynamics and flow of the song. Always taking consideration and mood into context when producing we had a real moment building and dropping the entire drum mix down to one crushed up mono mic for the bridge. That kind of collapsing and exploding was a real eureka moment, a magic moment of discovery which can only be found with exploration of the song this way.” – Northern Captives

Northern Captives is a unique DIY labour of love which calls on the creative abilities of members in every aspect of its output. Recording and mixing has been kept entirely in house and captained by singer and guitarist Sam Cook. Whilst bassist Steven Haddock directs all associated still and moving imagery.

‘ANXIETY DREAMS’ is the first single from Northern Captives in 2023 and follows their triptych of singles in 2022 ‘SIMPLE NARRATIVES’, ‘DISTRACTION OR CURE’ and ‘EVERY HIGH’ which saw the band grow nationally across multiple platforms and picking up support from BBC Radio 1, Kerrang! Radio, Total Rock Radio, Planet Rock Radio, Punktastic, and BBC Music Introducing made ‘Distraction or Cure’ their ‘Track Of The Week’.
