Postman by Day, Rockabilly by Night

Local postman to Branston, Washingborough and Heighington, Dave Brown, has lived in Lincoln for 40 years and during that time has dedicated much of his life to his love of music.

“While I was at school, I started a band with my friend called ‘The Rockin’ Imps’. We did our first gig at 15/16 years of age” explains Dave.

Since then, Dave went on to be in various other bands, including Sweet Memories who won many talent contests and even had a stint in Dubai.

He started his current rockabilly band, The Hicksville Bombers, in 1992. “While I was a civil engineer in the building trade I worked away from home and the music fizzled out, but when I got made redundant in 1991, I joined the Royal Mail part time and started The Hicksville Bombers.”

“I was passing by Newark Showground and I saw American vintage cars going in, so I took my now wife Stacey into it. While I was watching the bands, I said I’d love to play up there. We recorded a demo tape and sent it to Chris Jackson the owner, who booked us for the next one and we played it every year after that sharing the bill with bands such as Suzie Quattro, Chas & Dave, Alvin Stardust, Darts, Matchbox and Dr Hook.” The Americana turned into the highlight of Dave’s year and became a family affair when his son and daughter were born and would beg to skip school each year so they could attend.

The Hicksville Bombers: Heaven in Hell

The Hicksville Bombers have played across Europe and completed a two-week tour around New York USA. The band still play regularly and have just released their album Heaven in Hell. Upcoming festivals include Belgium in November and a European tour for March 2024.

The talent in the Brown family isn’t exclusive to Dave, and his daughter Sharna-mae and son Scott also have bands and regularly perform. “One day my daughter said to me ‘Dad I’m trying to do a band at school, but they just mess around’”, Dave recalls, “so I told her to learn a couple of songs and get up with our band, and she did.”

A couple of months later Scott was playing a plastic guitar on his Xbox, so Dave grabbed his real guitar and played Hotel California to his son’s amazement. Inspired, Scott soon learnt how to play the guitar and not long after performed with The Hicksville Bombers in front of a crowd of thousands.

Since then, his children have been in multiple bands, and Dave could not be prouder. “It’s amazing for my wife and I to watch our son and daughter perform and have many times had a tear in our eyes. It’s also great when we all get booked to play the same festival and have a get together – we were even played on BBC introducing on the same night.”
