Society for Lincolnshire History and Archaeology Celebrates 50 Years

This year, the Society for Lincolnshire History and Archaeology (SLHA) celebrates its Golden Jubilee. Although the foundations of the organisation date back to 1844, the present Society was established in 1974 and so has been in existence for 50 years.

A lively and exciting programme of events and activities has been planned to mark this important milestone and everyone is very welcome to come and join in. The programme will begin in April and run right through until Christmas.

The first event is a celebratory ‘Golden Jubilee Conference’ to be held at Bishop Grosseteste University on Saturday 20th April, starting at 9.30am. Topics covered will include an overview of the fascinating and intriguing history of the foundation of the Society over the last five decades.

The Conference will include reflections of the diversity of SLHA Local History activities throughout the county, and the influence of key members including Flora Murray and Terence Leach. An illustrated presentation with a focus on Industrial Archaeology will encompass an exciting journey through a range of events and activities of the last 50 years which have helped increase and broaden our knowledge and understanding of this subject throughout Lincolnshire.

The techniques of building recording and how they have changed and developed over the last half century with a reference to how different techniques have been employed in the recording of buildings in Lincolnshire, will be illustrated and explained.

Important archaeological developments and discoveries in Lincolnshire since 1974 with highlights from the Fens, the City of Lincoln and wider Lincolnshire will be explored and discussed as part of what promises to be an enjoyable and informative day.

The Golden Jubilee Conference will take place at Bishop Grosseteste University, Longdales Rd, Lincoln on Saturday 20th April from 9.30am – 4.30pm. Everyone is most welcome.

Admission is £32.00 for non-members and £25.00 for SLHA members.
