The Local Man Who Ran 5k A Day For 365 Days

Jim Jagger, local resident of Welton, started running in lockdown and decided to challenge himself to run 5k every single day for 365 days.

Jim, Director of Animation at Rockstar Games, is an ambassador for SpecialEffect – a UK based charity who want inclusion in the gaming community. They aim to transform the lives of physically disabled people across the world through the innovative use of technology. At the heart of their work is their mission to maximise fun and quality of life by helping people control video games. It’s much more than just fun, by levelling the playing field, they aim to bring families and friends together and have a profoundly positive impact on quality of life, confidence and rehabilitation.

When lockdown struck and Jim wanted to get out of the house, as someone who was already passionate about living a healthy lifestyle, the allowance for daily exercise was a saviour. As an avid swimmer who couldn’t swim due to pool closures, he decided to try something else. After realising he rather enjoyed running, he wanted to push himself and had an idea… what if he could run 5k every single day for a year? Jim started to document his journey on his Instagram page @jimjogger and has posted daily updates ever since.

Throughout each run, Jim has been raising money and awareness for his chosen charity both in his daily 5k and by participating in events such as the Lincoln 10k and The London Marathon. To date Jim has raised nearly £6,000 for SpecialEffect and doesn’t plan to stop anytime soon.

Jim explains why the charity is important to him, “I make videogames – I work for Rockstar so we make Grand Theft Auto, Red Dead Redemption and these big games, and not everyone can play the games we make because the controllers are difficult for severely disabled people, so finding a charity like this that can enable people to play the games that we make and give them a sense of community and kind of a level playing field with everybody else is wonderful, it’s something we can’t really do through work so I do it in my spare time.”

Running obviously has massive physical health benefits and Jim is the fastest he has ever been, but it has a massive benefit for mental health too, “Initially it was just to get out of the house for an hour a day when we were in lockdown” says Jim, “and then it became more about fitness, but then that evolved into also improving my mental health actually because I really enjoyed it and it gave me space to clear my head and time for me to think – it was great.”

Since making his running Instagram page, Jim has found a community of likeminded people which has provided encouragement along the way, “It was self-motivated at first, but then I found other people on Instagram that were doing similar things and I followed people that are a similar ability to me – because you get some people who are just incredible – so I was trying to find people who are in a similar place to me and then you just kind of encourage each other and end up making friends with these people.” His final day of running 5k every day was 22nd November – but this isn’t the end of Jim’s journey, and you can follow him on Instagram @jimjogger to keep up to date with what comes next.
