YMCA Lincolnshire Sleep Easy 2024

Every year, we encourage people to register for Sleep Easy and sleep out in cardboard boxes, in the grounds of Lincoln Cathedral, to raise money. The event always has a heart-warming community feel, whilst also giving a small taste of what it’s like to sleep on the streets. Everyone who registers then sets up a fundraising page and encourages friends, family, colleagues and neighbours to sponsor them.

Since its beginnings in 2010, YMCA Sleep Easy has seen over 7,000 people sleep rough in order to raise over £1.5 million for local YMCA services that assist people experiencing homelessness in rebuilding their lives. YMCA Lincolnshire’s Sleep Easy has grown year on year; raising up to £25,000 each time.

The impact that just one day of raising money can have is remarkable – everyone who takes part in Sleep Easy will be helping a person experiencing homelessness to:

  • Find safety, security and support
  • Improve their mental and physical health
  • Develop skills for independent living
  • Reach their full potential

This year we are looking to raise funds to support the transformation of the eight-bed shared accommodation at Sheridan House into 16 self-contained homes to directly support vulnerable and disadvantaged people experiencing homelessness. Funds raised from last year’s Sleep Easy helped us to support 131 vulnerable individuals over the course of a year at our emergency accommodation.

Over recent years we have seen an uptake of vulnerable individuals being supported by our emergency accommodation services. At our Nomad Centre, we offer emergency housing to some of the most vulnerable and disadvantaged people in Lincolnshire. We provide 22 rooms that offer a safe space for people coming directly from the streets, prison, mental health facilities and family breakdown. These are people who have experienced mental health difficulties and substance misuse challenges. We provide ongoing assistance to promote the development of life skills, self-confidence, social interaction, and the achievement of personal goals. We achieve this through budgeting guidance, psychotherapeutic counselling, enrichment activities and funded special projects.
